Here is Jubeda's story. Meet Jubeda. Jubeda is physically disabled from having contracted polio when she was 2-1/2 years old. Both of her legs are deformed and paralyzed from the disease. Her two sisters and one brother did not contract the disease-just Jubeda. Until last year, when she was 26, Jubeda spent her entire life inside her parents' modest home, dragging herself around on the floor. While growing up, she would watch her sisters and brother leave the house to go play with friends, and it would hurt her heart being left behind. As is the case for many physically disabled Bangladeshis, Jubeda seldom left the house. Her family said that it was too much work to get Jubeda in to and out of the car which they borrowed on occasion, but there was also the embarrassment and shame of having a disabled family member. Jubeda remembers the time when she was a teenager that the whole family including herself-went to a picnic spot for family gathering. When they got there, the family left Jubeda in the car. Jubeda never felt the warm sand. About a year ago, a family friend told Jubeda about the Sunrider Disable Welfare Foundation and the work that Sunrider does for the disabled. Jubeda applied to the school and was accepted. During her very first day at Sunrider, she was loaned a second-hand wheelchair. She got up and sat in it. For the first time in her life, Jubeda did not have to look up all the time to talk with others. She was on the same level as other people, and she was mobile. That experience was overwhelming. At Sunrider Disable Welfare Foundation, Jubeda has also learned to use a hand-operated tricycle for journeys outside. The first time she was asked to do the shopping, Jubeda was anxious. She didn't know how she would be treated in the outside world. She got on her tricycle and went to the local market, by herself. Now Jubeda loves to do the shopping. For the first time in her life, she can transport herself around town on the hand-operated tricycle and buy what is needed for the residents at Sunrider Disable Welfare Foundation. Jubeda has made good friends at Sunrider Disable Welfare Foundation, and with their newfound independence, they can all visit each other at their homes. Jubeda is working hard to learn computer skills and master English, her second language. Her dream is to have a job and live a more independent life. Then she hopes to help others. Agape continues to open the world to Jubeda. Recently, she and other students were taken to the picnic, and this time she got to get her feet sandy and wet. She immediately fell in love with the picnic spot. When asked what was her favorite thing about Sunrider Disable Welfare Foundation, she said, "The love at Sunrider Disable Welfare Foundation I love how they love people." |
